In this compelling 30-minute Zoom presentation, “Survivors, Not Fighters: The Rescue and Rehabilitation of Fighting Dogs,” Charissa Sendejas will share the realities behind these remarkable dogs and the work required to help them heal. Through the inspiring story of Valor and other survivors, attendees will gain insight into the physical and emotional trauma these dogs endure, the rehabilitation process, and the importance of responsible behavioral management, fostering, adoption, and public safety. (SSR), a Houston-based 501(c)(3) animal welfare organization dedicated to helping street dogs, shelter dogs, and owned pets in crisis. With more than 20 years of experience in animal rescue, Charissa has worked hands-on with dogs from a wide variety of backgrounds, including neglect, abuse, abandonment, behavioral challenges, and victims rescued from organized dogfighting operations. Her work centers on understanding each individual dog—their behavior, triggers, needs, and capacity for rehabilitation. Through her experience with Valor and many other fight-dog survivors, Charissa has become a passionate advocate for reducing the stigma surrounding these dogs while promoting responsible rehabilitation and community education. She is committed to expanding her impact through rescue, advocacy, education, and providing valuable resources that help both animals and the people who care for them.
