2024 State of Animal Welfare Address

Watch the State of Animal Welfare Address with special remarks from City of Houston Mayor John Whitmire. Houston PetSet Co-Presidents Tama Lundquist and Tena Lundquist Faust gave an overview of the current state of animal welfare in Houston, providing context for what actions need to be taken in order to solve the animal homelessness crisis. Their remarks were bookends to Mayor John Whitmire who spoke about how his new administration plans to make Houston a leader in the animal welfare community by dedicating resources and implementing consistent standards for all Houston-area animal shelters.

Thanks for sending this Megan. I’m impressed with John Whitmire making a commitment to doing something about our stray animal problem and cruel treatment of animals. He attended a Friends For Life event years ago and I knew he cared about animals.

  2. Houston spends less per capita on animal control than any other major city in Texas.

The difference in budgets from city to city is striking. For fiscal year 2024, Houston budgeted $15.6 million for BARC. In Dallas, animal services was allocated $18.3 million. In San Antonio, animal care services were just given $28.5 million by City Council in the wake of a fatal mauling in February.
