Members of the UU Animal Ministry of Houston recently had the pleasure of attending a book signing for Renee King-Sonnen’s new book, Rowdy Girl: Confessions of a Vegan Cattle Rancher.
Renee King-Sonnen is well known in the animal advocacy community for the remarkable transformation of her Texas cattle ranch into a sanctuary for animals. Her journey began with a deep connection to a cow named Rowdy and ultimately led Renee to embrace veganism, challenge the assumptions she had grown up with about farmed animals, and dedicate herself to creating a more compassionate world.
In Rowdy Girl, Renee shares that personal transformation in her own words. The book explores her life as a cattle rancher’s wife, her growing awareness of the individual animals around her, and the difficult but ultimately life-changing decision to move away from animal agriculture. It is a story about questioning long-held traditions, following one’s conscience, and discovering how dramatically a single change of heart can reshape a life.
UUAM Houston members Megan Pantuliano, Edmund Pantuliano, and Paul Smolen attended the signing and each had the opportunity to meet Renee and have a copy of Rowdy Girl personally signed.
It was especially meaningful to spend time with someone whose work so closely reflects the values of the UU Animal Ministry: compassion, respect for animals, and a willingness to expand our circle of concern to include all living beings.
We’re grateful to Renee for sharing her story and for continuing to inspire people to reconsider their relationships with animals. Rowdy Girl promises to be both a fascinating memoir and an important contribution to the growing conversation about animal advocacy, veganism, and compassionate living.
