From Unthinkable to Inevitable: Believing in a Plant-Based Food System

Sunday November 9, 7pm ET  / 6pm CT / 5pm MT / 4pm PT

Don’t miss this special online presentation from the UU Animal Ministry!

In her work at the Better Food Foundation, Unitarian Universalist minister Rev. Jennifer Channin focuses on solutions to make plant-centered dining easier to achieve, whether it’s in religious communities, schools, or businesses. However, to get leaders to even consider these solutions, she has to overcome what she sees as the biggest barrier to creating an ethical food system: the belief that it is impossible. She writes, “Our beliefs determine the shape of what is possible, and many of our food system’s leaders hold beliefs about food that are rooted in fear of change, fear of scarcity, and fear of push-back. In order to create the plant-centered food system that our world and its inhabitants need, religious communities have a crucial role to play: we can help society believe that a thriving world without factory farming is possible, and that transformation begins in our own congregations.”

Since 2021, Rev. Jennifer has served as the Executive Director of the Better Food Foundation, a nonprofit whose mission is to incubate novel strategies for shifting to a world where plant-based food is the norm. Jennifer has served in nonprofit and faith-based organizations for more than 20 years, in roles including Program Coordinator for the UU Ministers Association and development consultant and philanthropic advisor to more than a dozen organizations. She has raised tens of millions of dollars for food systems and social justice organizations. She earned her Masters of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School and BA in International Development from McGill University. Jennifer is a dual citizen of the US and Brazil and lives in Julian, California, in an off-grid community with her partner, Aaron, and their dog, Buddy.
